FTA GHG Estimator – Accurate Emission Calculator

This tool will help you easily estimate the greenhouse gas emissions for your freight transportation activities.

How to Use This Calculator

Fill in all the fields in the form to estimate the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions for your freight transportation activity. Here’s what you need to provide:

  • Distance Traveled (miles): The total distance the vehicle will travel.
  • Fuel Efficiency (mpg): The fuel efficiency of the vehicle in miles per gallon.
  • Fuel Type: The type of fuel used by the vehicle (either gasoline or diesel).
  • Load Weight (tons): The weight of the load being carried in tons.
  • Number of Trips: The number of trips the vehicle will take.
  • Vehicle Type: The type of vehicle used (light, medium, or heavy duty).

How it Calculates the Results

The calculator uses the following steps to estimate the GHG emissions:

  1. It calculates the total fuel consumption by dividing the distance traveled by the fuel efficiency.
  2. It then computes the baseline emissions by multiplying the total fuel consumed by the emission factor for the selected fuel type.
  3. The baseline emissions are then adjusted for the load weight, using a factor based on the vehicle type.
  4. Finally, the adjusted emissions are multiplied by the number of trips to get the total emissions.

Limitations

Please note that this calculator provides an estimate based on average emission factors and load weights. The actual emissions may vary based on specific conditions such as driving behavior, maintenance of the vehicle, and specific fuel variations. For more precise calculations, consider consulting with an environmental expert or using more detailed data specific to your scenario.
