How to Use the LCA Estimator

To use this Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Estimator, please follow the steps below:

  1. Select your vehicle type from the dropdown menu.
  2. Select the fuel type that your vehicle uses.
  3. Enter the total distance you plan to travel in kilometers.
  4. Enter the number of passengers traveling, including the driver.
  5. Enter the fuel efficiency of your vehicle in liters per 100 kilometers (L/100km).
  6. Click the “Calculate” button to see the estimated CO2 emissions per passenger.

How the Results are Calculated

The LCA Estimator uses the following steps to calculate the CO2 emissions per passenger:

  • It determines the base emission rate for the selected fuel type.
  • It calculates the total fuel consumption using the given fuel efficiency and distance.
  • It multiplies the fuel consumption by the emission rate to get the total emissions.
  • It divides the total emissions by the number of passengers to get the per passenger emissions.

Limitations of the Calculator

While this calculator provides a useful estimate of CO2 emissions for various vehicles and travel scenarios, it has certain limitations:

  • The emission rates used are generalized and may not account for specific vehicle models or conditions.
  • Electric vehicles are considered to have zero emissions in this estimate, though actual emissions can vary based on the source of electricity.
  • Hybrid vehicles are given a generic emission rate that may not reflect specific driving conditions (e.g., urban vs. highway).
  • Environmental factors, maintenance levels, and driving behaviors are not accounted for and can affect actual emissions.
